South African Broadcasting Corporation

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is a South African state-owned public broadcasting company that produces news, television, radio, and education media (Bloomberg, n.d.). It was created as the state radio agency for South Africa in 1936, twelve years before the National Party, which instituted apartheid, came into power. The Party used the SABC as a means of advancing state interests; under the Party, the SABC expanded its media output to television broadcasting and film production, albeit under heavy Party influence (Dispatch, 1999).

Today, the SABC is criticised for being biased towards the African National Congress (ANC) government, the current ruling power of South Africa and for censoring anti-ANC-related coverage. The SABC leadership has also been accused of corruption. Notably, in 2016, Hlaudi Motsoeneng, an SABC executive, was fired by a ruling from the High Court of South Africa (Brandt, 2016).
