The Associated Press

The Associated Press is a news agency based in the United States of America. It operates from “9 regional editing hubs and 248 news bureaus worldwide in 99 countries” (AP News, 2019). Founded in 1846, it is a non-profit organization headquartered in New York City.

It is known most widely however, for being the only organisation to closely report the elections since 1848. On election night, “race callers in each state are armed with a wealth of additional detailed information from our election research team, including demographics, the number of absentee ballots, and political issues that may affect the outcome of races they must call” (AP News, n.d.) before eventually calling and announcing the winner of the election.

Other than the role it plays in extensively covering the elections, Associated Press covers national and international affairs in a multitude of areas ranging from sport to business and technology. It is published in multiple formats such as videos, text and data and also operates the AP Radio Network.

It is important that delegates from this news agency write in a largely unbiased and politically neutral manner. Note, however, that AP appeals to a more non-conservative audience, and may take the likewise stance in more polarising topics such as renewable energy, rights to privacy, gender equality and international conflicts.
